Draft EU Firearms Directive - Update 3rd Feb

Here is the latest Position Paper from BSSC, which includes HBSA input, for members information.

Last Thursday, the 28th January I attended, along with other stakeholders, a round table with Vicky Ford MEP in London. This was a useful meeting and I will report further in due course.

As you will see the fight continues and it is clear that there is great opposition to what is a very faulted draft Directive, which ignored the usual consultation process and any unintended consequences. It seems clear now that a further draft directive with revisions will be produced.

Vicky Ford, a UK MEP (she is Conservative and a member of Countryside Alliance) was appointed Chairman of the IMCO Committee and Rapporteur, which has been most helpful to the shooting and collecting world.

One point mentioned by her was that some of the correspondence received was rather strong, forceful and impolite.  Whilst I am sure that would not be from any of our members we may note that in writing to MEPs, or anyone involved in the process, letters may be firm and to the point, but should always be polite. Anything to the contrary does not help our cause.

I believe that HBSA is at the forefront of the process, and we have fully represented the collecting and shooting community, notably in the historic arms and heritage area, as well as working closely with BSSC, Royal Armouries and IWM, FESAC and the European collectors.
