Members may recall Winnie the Pooh from their wild youth. Not so many will be aware that E H Shepard, the Illustrator who produced Winnie, the Wind in the Willows illustrations and many others voluntarily joined the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1915. I recently went to a splendid show at the new “House of Illustration” which is just behind Kings Cross and over the canal in the newly refurbished area. Address 2 Granary Square N1C 4BH houseofillustration.org.uk The exhibition has much of Shepard’s work from WW1, both cartoons and artillery spotting drawings, plus memorabilia, and is well worth a visit.
