The following note came from Stephen Petroni following the meeting yesterday. We continue in direct touch with IMCO and Vicky Ford and her team.

EU Directive

The 5th December trialogue meeting, which was meant to close the negotiations between Parliament and Council under a growling Commission’s watch, started at 2000 hrs and ended the morning of the 6th Dec at 0300 hrs. Stephen Petroni (FESAC chair), and also David Penn, were on standby for any possible consultation. However the information that came through mainly concerned the exemptions for sport shooters.

According to informed sources there was agreement on key issues while the Commission opposed any watering down of its original proposal. However in the end the meeting was still inconclusive. The press conference that was to be held this morning at 0930 hrs was cancelled and a written statement is expected to be issued.

The question now is whether another meeting will be convened before the Christmas recess, which effectively signals the end of the Slovak presidency, to iron out pending issues or whether the file will be passed on to the next presidency (Malta’s).

In Stephen Petroni's opinion the EU will do its utmost to close it off now, mainly for image and political expediency in some member states particularly France.
