Royal Gunpowder Mills at Waltham Abbey are under threat

If members are not already aware, the Royal Gunpowder Mills at Waltham Abbey are under threat of being converted into a holiday camp.

The Mills have been making a loss since they opened as a visitor attraction and the proposal, and it is only a proposal at this stage, is to lease most of the site to a company that operates children’s holiday camps. This in turn may mean that the buildings currently used as part of the Powdermills visitor attraction will be turned over to other purposes.

Needless to say there is great local opposition to all of this and a website www.save-rgm.org has been set up to rally the troops.

The site is very large, and apart from the visitor centre where the main displays are, is rather run down and costly to maintain so a good plan needs to be put together.
